When Bohr was studying atoms and electrons, he primarily used hydrogen atoms in his
research – the simplest atoms, with only one proton and one electron. He developed what
we now know as the Bohr model, or the planetary model, to explain how electrons were
arranged in atoms, proposing that electrons existed in discrete circular orbits around the
nucleus. However, once scientists began to examine more complex atoms with more
protons and electrons, they realized that Bohr’s model of the atom did not always
accurately predict what they saw in their experimental data.
This ultimately led to the development of the quantum mechanical model of the atom,
where the location of electrons is not precisely known. Instead of identifying exact circular
orbits, the quantum mechanical model describes the position of electrons in terms of
probability – electrons are most likely to be found in certain regions of space around the
nucleus in various shapes known as orbitals. Electrons tend to fill orbitals in a particular
order, starting with those at the lowest energy levels. Electron configurations and orbital
diagrams are used to represent electron distribution within these orbitals.
You have learned about the Bohr model and quantum mechanical model previously. In
this activity, you will compare the Bohr model to the quantum mechanical model of a
number of atoms; you will then examine some of the data that indicated to scientists that
the Bohr model did not fully explain the structure of electrons in atoms, prompting the
development of the quantum mechanical model.
Pre-activity questions
Answer the following questions to review what you have learned previously about the
quantum mechanical model of the atom:
1. How are the four different sublevels of the quantum mechanical model labeled?
2. How many electrons can fit in each orbital?
3. How many orbitals are in each of the four sublevels?
4. How many electrons can fit in each of the four sublevels?
We are a professional custom writing website. If you have searched a question and bumped into our website just know you are in the right place to get help in your coursework.
